Hammer & Steel Expands To Meet Demand

Mike Ormsby can recall the exact date Hammer & Steel entered the piling rig business. "We scrambled to take our first rig to CONEXPO in 1996, with no firm order in hand," he said. Since then, Ormsby noted, Hammer & Steel has seen a rapid increase in its work with piling and drilling rigs.

Ormsby, one of Hammer and Steel's regional managers, has observed the effect of adding a West Coast office and the company's close relationship with Construction Equipment Services on the East Coast. "Our piling and drill rig business has grown to a large rental and sale business throughout the country," he said. "We are able to give contractors nationwide the technical and service support needed for these hi-tech rigs."

The increase in this business has also grown naturally with the heightened exposure of contractors to new techniques that can increase production rates and solve certain job site problems. "The ABI, Banut, Delmag, and LoDril rigs each have unique design and performance features and are appropriate for different types of jobs," explained Ormsby.

To support this growing business, Hammer & Steel has additional rigs for delivery in the first quarter of 2006.

  • TM 11/14 (400+ hp, 79,000 lb shipping weight)

  • TM 18/22B (650+ hp)
  • TM 18/22B (90,000 ft. torque mast)
  • TM 20/25 (80'+ piling lengths)

Bay Shore Systems

  • LoDril HTFB-40 (zero-tail-swing Komatsu PC308 carrier)
  • LoDril HTFB-60 (Cat 325 carrier)
  • LoDril LM30 (Cat 315 carrier)

Delmag Drill Rigs

  • RH18 (Cat 330 carrier)
  • RH26 (Cat 330 carrier, heavy duty)

Tieback Rigs

  • Used Klemm 806 and 807
  • Used Huette 605 and 605M3
  • New Jano HVS 6387

The rigs offer an alternate method on some projects, but not all, and Hammer & Steel continues to work with crane-suspended vibratory drivers, diesel hammers, and hydraulic impact hammers. "We are very excited that our piling and drill rig business is expanding so quickly," said Ormsby, "but we are particularly pleased that our core business of steel sheet piling and conventional pile driving equipment sales and rentals has remained strong at the same time."

With both rigs and crane-suspended units now available, Hammer & Steel has an extensive range of equipment to meet the unique requirements of most any job. "This variety of choice extends to all of our product lines," noted Ormsby. "We are not restricted in terms of the solution we provide," he said proudly. "We can offer a package that best works for the job."
