With population growth trends worldwide, the ever-increasing demand for improved infrastructure is apparent. Hammer & Steel has long served the needs of domestic contractors and, as part of its recent effort to meet customer needs, has focused efforts on providing the same level of product quality and industry expertise to less accessible and international locations.
As part of this focus, Hammer & Steel representative Andy Schroeder is assigned to the Caribbean territory. Schroeder's responsibilities are similar to those of any Hammer & Steel representative – consulting on the planning of various projects including review of site variables, provision of CAD layouts for piling products, communication with participating manufacturers, hands-on inspection and even repair of equipment when necessary.
The Cargo Ferry Pier construction project on the island of Vieques, off the coast of Puerto Rico, is a good example of Hammer & Steel's ability to offer an increased level of sophistication as well as diversity of options to pile driving projects and contractors outside of the contiguous United States. After preparing a complete sheet pile and tie rod layout design for the project, Hammer & Steel is providing all material and equipment requirements to contractor J. Fortuna Constructora for the task. These materials include 60' long PZ 35 sheet pile with coal tar epoxy coating, all required tie rod and waler material, H-Pile template material, spud piles and 36" diameter dolphin pile with galvanized coating. The sheet pile and pipe on the job is being installed by a powerful combination of a PVE 2323 high frequency, variable moment, vibratory driver and an HPH4500 Dawson double acting, hydraulic impact hammer.
The benefits of this level of quality infrastructure will be felt by the island of Vieques and its residents for many decades to come as critical, day-to-day supply and transportation needs are ensured by the pier and its surrounding structure.
